The situation
A couple approached us with an unusual and daunting problem. They had moved to the other side of the world, but during the move virtually all of their financial records had accidentally been thrown away.
They were left without a clear record of the financial arrangements they had built up over many years. They did not know where to begin identifying their pensions, investments, life assurance policies, bank accounts, retirement arrangements or the savings plans set up for their children. Important historic records relating to their wider family financial affairs were also missing.
Where things became complicated
No starting point
Before they could make sensible decisions about their future, they first needed to understand their past.
Distance
Because they were now living overseas, reconstructing their history meant more than contacting a few UK institutions.
Coordination
Bringing together enquiries across multiple providers and organisations holding fragments of their financial history.
The Montfort approach
01 Reconstruct
We began the process of reconstructing their financial history, identifying providers and historic arrangements, and obtaining replacement information and documentation.
02 Bridge the distance
We helped bridge the practical distance between the couple and the organisations holding their financial information, coordinating enquiries and bringing the information together.
03 Hand over to planning
We are now working alongside a financial adviser whom we recommended, so the reconstructed information can be turned into a coordinated financial plan.
The turning point
Before they could plan their future, they had to recover their past.
The value of this work was not, at first, about finding a new investment or financial product. It was about recovering their financial history, restoring control, and creating a foundation from which their finances could properly be reviewed and planned.
The outcome
For the first time since losing their records, the couple had a secure foundation from which their finances could be properly reviewed and planned, and a coordinated financial plan is now being built on that foundation with a recommended adviser.
What this case shows
01 Look at the whole picture
Pensions, investments, life assurance and savings plans for their children all had to be reconstructed together to see the whole position.
02 A transaction isn't always a solution
The couple didn't need a new product first. They needed their history back.
03 Timing matters
Sensible decisions about the future weren't possible until the past had been reconstructed.
